Nevjernica

Odgojena u strogoj muslimanskoj obitelji i široj klanovskoj zajednici, Hirsi Ali preživjela je građanski rat, osakaćivanje genitalija, brutalno premlaćivanje, pubertet obilježen izuzetnom pobožnošću, uspon Muslimanskog bratstva i život u četiri različite diktature. Iako živi u stalnoj opasnosti, i dalje odbija zašutjeti.

Something for the soul/Za dušu

It is said old loves can haunt us. The Lover creates this feeling through an atmosphere of shadows, veils, floating memories that came from - was it this boat trip or the last one? from age eight or twelve or thirty? In the end it doesn't matter, for the experience is now embedded, a distinct yet inseparable part of the personality. Marguerite Duras mines her own past to tell The Lover, the story of an adolescent girl growing up in Indochina during the 1930s. The girl is wayward, rebellious; one day, returning to school on the ferry, dressed in gold lame shoes, a man's hat and a silk dress, she encounters the son of a Chinese millionaire. Soon they are involved in the first affair of her life, one she claims has no basis in love for her. He can never marry her - his father has refused - and she says she will leave without regrets. But is that possible? Years later she looks back. By presenting ideas and memories in paragraphs that are literally isolated yet constantly overlapping, The Lover creates a misty world of connections made by emotion rather than logic or chronology, a feeling that lingers after the book itself is closed You can find more http://www.thingsasian.com/stories-photos/2368

October Reading/Citanje za oktobar

Island Beneath the Sea, her eighth novel, is a historical romance of slaves and pirates, set on the Caribbean island of Saint-Domingue and in the Vieux Carré of New Orleans, between 1770 and 1810 – the period of the French Revolution, the slaves’ revolt of Toussaint Louverture and the Louisiana Purchase. The heroine is Zarité, known as Tété, a slave girl of mixed race who is raped at the age of 11 by Toulouse Valmorain, her cruel and proud master, and subsequently endures any number of injustices, in which she is sustained by her indomitable character and unshakeable faith in voodoo. In bite-sized chapters, which become wearisome over such a generous length, the novel presents a world of powdered wigs and bursting corsets, of brutality in sugar cane fields and debauchery in opulent brothels – the many sex scenes are excruciating – into which historical events occasionally barge with the finesse of a muddy prop forward. read more http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/bookreviews/7771601/Island-Beneath-the-Sea-by-Isabel-Allende-review.html http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/02/books/review/Bahadur-t.html?_r=1

July reading/Citanje za Juli

A Mercy by Toni Morrison A powerful tragedy distilled into a jewel of a masterpiece by the Nobel Prize–winning author of Beloved and, almost like a prelude to that story, set two centuries earlier. In the 1680s the slave trade was still in its infancy. In the Americas, virulent religious and class divisions, prejudice and oppression were rife, providing the fertile soil in which slavery and race hatred were planted and took root. Jacob is an Anglo-Dutch trader and adventurer, with a small holding in the harsh north. Despite his distaste for dealing in “flesh,” he takes a small slave girl in part payment for a bad debt from a plantation owner in Catholic Maryland. This is Florens, “with the hands of a slave and the feet of a Portuguese lady.” Florens looks for love, first from Lina, an older servant woman at her new master’s house, but later from a handsome blacksmith, an African, never enslaved. There are other voices: Lina, whose tribe was decimated by smallpox; their mistress, Rebekka, herself a victim of religious intolerance back in England; Sorrow, a strange girl who’s spent her early years at sea; and finally the devastating voice of Florens’ mother. These are all men and women inventing themselves in the wilderness. A Mercy reveals what lies beneath the surface of slavery. But at its heart it is the ambivalent, disturbing story of a mother who casts off her daughter in order to save her, and of a daughter who may never exorcise that abandonment. Acts of mercy may have unforeseen consequences. May day book - "Deseta muza" od Erike Dzong

A Carl će poslužiti. Stoga, Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.(Margaret Mead) Tu smo, stižemo! Živjele bookerke! By Asja Trbovic koja nam je pripremila predivno predstavljanje zivota i djela Zadie S.

Meetings
First meeting can take place at your home or some friendly environment since you need to get to know the women and take your time to talk your way to the club.

Place is important for our meetings, so pick a comfortable, cozy and book club friendly place. Food and drinks are necessity. Cocktails and/or wine preferred

Meetings should be held once a month (suggestion was after the whole cycle of 28 days)

We also agreed we should read poetry during the meetings.

Meetings and other info will be posted on our blog, just put the date and place (Belgrade, Zagreb etc.) time and place should be shared only between members.

We also thought it would be great if one of us is visiting any of the cities where we have sister book clubs she should contact them and go to their meeting.

About the author we read
Each time one of us will prepare a presentation on the author for the group, since we rarely take time to learn about the authors we read ourselves.

Books to read
We will pick our next book after all members vote on the suggested list of books and authors
